Grocery Shopping: Get In and Get Out Fast!
Your menu is ready and it’s time to put together your grocery list. Sounds simple enough, right? Okay, well here’s the deal. When you’re trying to shop with kids, the primary objective is to get what you need and get out as speedily as possible. So, why not make finding your grocery items super easy and quick.
You may assume that you have two basic methods for creating your list. The first is to just write your list in any order, and the second is to use some kind of pre-made checklist that is broken down by department. What about a third option? Create your list based on the aisles in your store.
Yes, this will take some time initially, but the rewards are worth it. The idea is to organize your grocery list based on the aisles in your store, not necessarily on the departments. This way you shop by going straight down your list instead of up and down or back and forth as you would with either of the first two methods I mentioned.
How it’s done
- While shopping at your supermarket, start making notes as you go down each aisle as to what kind of grocery items are located on that particular aisle.
- At home, begin to compile an organized and in order aisle list based on your notes. This is the listing you will use while creating your grocery list.
- After a few weeks, you should be able to make your grocery list based on the order that you come to the items in your store.
The result
Because your list is ordered by aisle, you are able to go directly to the aisles on which those specific grocery items are located. In turn, you limit impulsive buying because you are only going down necessary aisles. Having this plan makes getting in and out of the grocery store a breeze, and when you have little ones with you, that’s exactly what you need.
My strategies for simplifying menu planning and grocery shopping have definitely made my life easier, and I hope that they can do the same for you.

I’ve thought of doing this before. It’s so annoying when I realize I forgot to get something two aisles back. If I do that three times in one trip I just end up walking around in circles. Great idea!

I actually started out by using a spreadsheet in which I listed all my aisles and then left a few lines between each so that I could just fill in the blanks for what I needed from that particular aisle. Once I had everything listed, I would use the hide row option on the spreadsheet and hide the aisles on which I didn’t have items listed. I would then print out the list and it would show just the aisles that I needed to go down.
Yes, it does take some time to get organized, but for me it has been completely worth the time and effort.
The only reason I’m not still using my spreadsheet now is because my wonderful husband was nice enough to write me a computer program for making my grocery list.
Many grocery stores have a map / list of food items for each isle. Sometimes you just need to ask the customer service. I found this to be helpful when making my grocery list.

Thanks for the tip. I guess I had to do mine the hard way!
I love this approach. A really simple and very practical idea that most people wouldn’t even give a second thought about.
Hopefully the supermarket doesn’t do too many of those “let’s move everything around” routines (which I always sensed had something to do with getting us to buy more!).
I like your blog and layout,.. keep up the great work!
Cheers,
Barbara

My dad was an expert in the grocery store. He always made his list putting each item on the list per the isle in the grocery store. I never had the patience to do that. I never thought anyone else did it. I guess he was not alone!
Thanks for the memories.

This is EXACTLY what I’m attempting to make easier at http://outofeggs.com. Let me know if this helps any of you.
I am a organization freak and love this idea. It will take a bit to set up, but once it is, grocery shopping will be simplier.
Thanks
