Provoke Your Kids - To Laughter

Can you imagine a world without laughter? Boy, what a boring place it would be. One of the most wonderful sounds in the world is that of a child’s laughter, especially when it comes from your own little bundles of joy.
The other night as my kids were playing, I simply closed my eyes to savor the sounds of their laughter. Far too often, we take for granted the little things in life that make life enjoyable, like a child’s laughter.
Our undivided attention is often given to soothing our kids because of nightmares, boo boos and disappointments, but let’s also learn to listen to and cherish their giggles. They won’t be young for long and all we will be left with are those memories of their childhood laughter. With that in mind, let’s take a little time today to draw laughter out of them.
Need some ideas?
Oh, be creative, but here are a few of my favorites:
• Tickles: Most kids love to be tickled. It’s always a great start for those little munchkins.
• Stories: For the older variety, try telling a comical story about something you did in your younger days, and have a great laugh together at your expense. Be careful about what you tell though. You wouldn’t want to give them any ideas.
• Movies: Funny movies also provide plenty of humorous moments. So dig out a favorite hilarious family movie, pop it in the DVD player and have a blast. Don’t forget the popcorn.
Whatever you choose to do to provoke laughter, just have yourself a mini vacation from the mundane.

I agree. The sound of a child’s laughter is the best. I’ve often said that I wanted to make my daughter’s laugh my ringtone. Alas, I’m not tech-savvy, so I’ll have to resort to the real thing. ; )

I found you through a comment you made on Small Notebook and love this post of yours! I love listening to my children laugh together–I have 2 year old twins and a 3.5 year old. When they are together, especially the twins, they giggle and laugh uproariously. So sometimes, the way to provoke their laughter is to just let them be silly little kids–not to get too involved or too scheduled/planned. Kids laugh at the smallest provocation when they’re just goofing off and being silly together.
We also like to give each other funny looks across the table when we’re eating….

Betsy - You’re absolutely right. It is hilarious to hear the little ones laugh together and at each other. My 5 year old son can get my 1 1/2 year old little girl to laugh better than anyone else. My husband and I crack up just watching them. The funniest part is he doesn’t have to do much of anything for her to start giggling outrageously. I just love it!!
I love this post, too. Sometimes I focus too much on just getting through the day. But those moments when it’s just enjoying each other–laughing, tickling, goofing off–they’re so precious.

The laughter is wonderful…especially when BOTH siblings are laughing together. I like to jump into their activity sometimes. It catches them off guard and they love it. As ds is getting older, I’m learning to make a decent shot with a basketball.

I love hearing kids’ laughter. Every time I hear my kids laughing, I try to enjoy it because I know it won’t last very long. They grow up so fast!

I know. My daughter is almost two and I’m realizing that I won’t have a baby much longer, and my son is starting kindergarten in the fall. It just doesn’t seem possible.
It’s a lot of fun to hear my kids laugh. We do the funny faces and silly voices to get going. Once they start there is no turning back. They get really silly, and then I do too.
