Week Nine of Our Summer Travels : Greece

We’ve made it to the finale of our summer travels. Like I said before, I knew learning about Greece would be more exciting to both the kids and myself because it’s a country I’ve personally visited.

The kids really enjoyed looking at all the pictures we had taken while over there…..and there were a lot of them. I loved the fact that I could tell them about some of the biblical history that took place there, and some other interesting bits of information.

For example:

Mars Hill  – Where Paul preached….

(Please pardon my appearance. We had not slept since we left Alabama the day before.)

The prison in which Paul was held captive….

The incredibly beautiful beaches….

and an….um….ancient restroom….

Yes, the kids really got a kick out of this one. And why wouldn’t they, considering their Dad is sitting on it?!?

Moving right along….

We Read:

Hour of the Olympics

This book was much longer than the books we usually get, so we only read one. However, it had a lot of really good information within the story about ancient Greece.

We Made:

Greek Pottery

Olympic Torches & Olympic Medals

We Ate:

Oh, man! I think we were all about to explode after eating these for dinner Friday night. Gyros were our favorite meal while in Greece, so I was really worried about getting this one right.

While it may not have been completely authentic, it tasted pretty close and pretty incredible. We were suppose to eat the leftovers for lunch Saturday….but there was hardly anything left.

Here are the recipes I used to make the gyros:

  • Pita Bread – The pita turned out so good, my sweet husband dubbed me “Master Breadmaker.” Wow! (Yeah, right!)
  • Tzatziki Sauce – Yum! I used this online conversion site to calculate the measurements for the yogurt and olive oil.
  • Marinated Pork – We are going to try this marinade on chicken and steak as well.
  • French Fries – You want super crispy homemade fries? Try this recipe. They turned out perfect!

That’s a wrap! Hope you enjoyed our summer travels. We sure did! Now it’s time for homework, homework, homework….

If you could visit any country in the world, what would it be?

Was that really a restroom?! I also feel like telling him to stop sitting on it! Love the beach picture. The beaches around my area are nowhere close to looking as good as that. I’m so craving a gyro now~
