Sunday Devotion: Growing in Your Relationship with God
“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever!” 2 Peter 3:18 (NIV)
“See Spot run.” I bet we all remember the “Dick and Jane” books that were a part of our early reading. We were only young children at that time, and learning to read was a new and exciting adventure. Although a growing process, it was well worth the end result.
My five-year-old son is just beginning to read, and he is so excited about learning new words. It’s opening up his world to new experiences. Even though he enjoys having me read to him, he is finding it more fulfilling to read and learn for himself.
God wants us to feel the same way about him. He longs for us to desire to know Him for ourselves, not just listen to what others tell us about him. As a child grows in his reading ability, he increases his vocabulary and knowledge of the world around him.
As we grow in our relationship with God, we increase our knowledge of our Creator, as well as, increase our faith, compassion, strength, courage, peace, love and many other blessings.
So, how do we grow in our relationship with God? We continually read and study His word, pray, and surround ourselves with others who have relationships with Him.
Just as learning to read took time and effort, so is developing our relationship with the Lord. However, in both situations, the rewards are well worth the effort.
Prayer Time: Ask God to increase your desire to know Him and further your relationship with Him. Also, ask Him to reveal more about Himself to you as you study His word and pray.
