Kids Cooking: A Very Slightly Messy Manual

It can be so fun to cook with kids. They bring energy into the kitchen. Sometimes a little too much energy, but nevertheless, it’s entertaining to say the least. My son and I have a lot of fond memories from our kitchen creations and plan to continue making them.

On that note, I found the greatest little cookbook for cooking with kids. It’s called Kids Cooking: A Very Slightly Messy Manual. While researching to determine which kids cookbook might be a good one to try, I found that this particular one had very good ratings and has been around for quite a while.

As an added bonus, it came with colored measuring spoons for my son. Included in the instructions of each recipe are pictures of all the ingredients to help children determine what is needed for the recipe even if they can’t read yet.

When I first received this book, I was a little concerned that the food might not be as flavorful as I would like because it was simple recipes kids can make. I soon found that my concerns were unfounded. The food is very tasty. I did good on this one. :)

Unfortunately, due to a thing called copyright law, I can’t share any of the actual recipes with you. This blog doesn’t exactly earn enough to cover getting sued. What I can do though is tell you about a couple of the recipes and show you pictures of the end results.

The first thing we made together were these Personal Pizzas using English muffins.

I loved these because the sauce was a snap to prepare and they were really tasty. In addition, my kids enjoyed putting them together since they were small and “just their size.” I think I made a good decision in choosing this kid’s cookbook.

Tomorrow, I will be sharing a few tips for cooking with kids, and show you a super easy and yummy dessert we prepared together using this cookbook. (Hint: It contains chocolate.)

Sunday Devotion: God Hears You

“For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer.” 1 Peter 3:12

Do you sometimes feel that no matter how hard you pray, God doesn’t hear your voice? Well, you’re not alone. We all feel that way from time to time.

The truth, however, is that He does hear every prayer, no matter how big or small it seems. Because of His love for us, God always has our best interest in mind, even when it doesn’t appear that way to us. He sees the big picture and knows exactly what we need and when we need it.

Hebrews 13:5 says, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

In this verse, God is reassuring us that He is always listening to us, watching over us, and taking care of us.

Therefore, He always answers our prayers. Though, sometimes his answer is yes, sometimes it’s no, and sometimes it’s to wait. We may not always understand why he chooses to answer the way that he does. The good thing is that it’s not our responsibility to know why.

God knows we don’t understand his answers sometimes. For those times, he provides comfort and peace to us through the Holy Spirit. Our job, though not easy at times, is to accept his decisions by trusting in Him.

Prayer Time: Ask God to help you trust Him even when you don’t feel you have answers to your prayers, or don’t understand the answers to your prayers.

16 Ways to Rejuvenate

100 430x hammock1 16 Ways to Rejuvenate

Do you ever just need a break? Of course, you do. We all do. No matter how much fun and satisfaction we derive from taking care of our families, some times we need to take a step back and recoup ourselves.

The only way we can give our families our best is to find our best self. If you’re a mom, you’ve probably learned that being a mom can at times be:

  • Stressful
  • Exhausting
  • Overwhelming
  • Frustrating
  • Scary
  • and the list goes on…

This is why it’s imperative that we find avenues for replenishing the needs of our bodies and minds. Here are a few of my favorite ways for achieving these goals:

  1. Eat well - veggies, fruits, whole grains (you know, eat the good stuff)
  2. Exercise regularly - you’ll feel better, look better and be more confident
  3. Get plenty of sleep - not much explanation needed here
  4. Pamper yourself - nails, hair, shopping trip, soak in the tub, massage
  5. Listen to your body - be aware of signs of exhaustion, dehydration, etc
  6. Get creative - draw, paint, sew, write/journal, get crafty
  7. Rediscover you passions - charities, hobbies, anything that inspires you
  8. Read the Bible & pray - spiritual renewal, peace, guidance
  9. Loosen up - laugh, dance, sing
  10. Drink plenty of water - to detox and stay hydrated
  11. Have a “Girls Night/Day Out” - shop or just hang out for some good woman to woman conversation and fun
  12. Dress up for no good reason and go out - it’ll make you feel good all over
  13. Just say no - before your plate (appointments/engagements) gets too full
  14. Have a piece of chocolate - every girl needs a little chocolate once in a while
  15. Take a deep breath and relax
  16. Enjoy life - it’s too short for anything less

Try incorporating a few of these ideas into your life and see if it doesn’t bring a little more pep into your step. Yes, we are moms, and we are wives, but that shouldn’t mean we have to put our health, our dreams or our passions aside.

We must learn to intertwine these things into our roles as mothers and spouses. The main point here is don’t lose yourself, your well-being or your peace of mind because you’re a mom. Go give yourself a break.

Let me hear you now. What would you add to this list?
